Most stories are told after the outcome is known. Uncertainty becomes hindsight. Contradictions are cleaned up. Difficult decisions are reduced to lessons.
UP A TIER documents people before that happens.
We create cinematic documentary interviews centred on the people behind businesses, organisations, families, careers and ideas. Each story captures character in real time—what someone believes, what they are building, what is testing them and what they have not yet figured out.
The result is more than content. It is an interview with commercial value today and archival value tomorrow.
Conversations with people still in the middle of becoming.

The company, career, achievement or milestone provides the setting. The person living through it gives the story its meaning.
UP A TIER creates three forms of cinematic documentary interview.
FOUNDER PORTRAITS
Businesses usually document their products, services and milestones. We document the person who built them. Founder Portraits explore the decisions, pressure, relationships, beliefs, sacrifices and uncertainty behind a business. The completed interview can strengthen founder positioning, communicate the character behind the company and preserve who the founder was while they were still building it.
CHARACTER PORTRAITS
Not every meaningful story begins with a business. Character Portraits document individuals during significant periods of ambition, transition, reinvention, achievement or uncertainty. The completed interview becomes an honest record of who that person was, what mattered to them and how they understood their life at that particular moment.
LEGACY PORTRAITS
Most families preserve photographs. Very few preserve character. Legacy Portraits capture a person’s voice, mannerisms, humour, beliefs, relationships, memories and unfinished thoughts. The completed interview gives future generations something they can experience—not simply something they can read about.
Every commissioned interview begins with one complete, long-form conversation. From that central record, the interview can be shaped into chapters and shorter excerpts designed to work across different platforms—without separating the content from its original meaning.
THE INTERVIEW CAN COMMUNICATE SOMETHING TODAY—AND PRESERVE SOMETHING FOR TOMORROW.
Every UP A TIER interview is structured around four elements designed to document the person as they are now—not the simplified version created by hindsight.
The conversation is researched and shaped around the subject, but they are never coached towards predetermined answers. The purpose is to create enough direction for a story to emerge—and enough space for the person to reveal themselves.
01 / THE PRESENT
WHO ARE YOU NOW?
Every interview begins by establishing a timestamp. Not simply what someone has achieved, but what matters to them now, what they are building, what they believe and what success currently means to them. The objective is to preserve an honest record of the person at this particular point in their life.
02 / THE PRESSURE
WHAT IS TESTING YOU?
Character becomes visible through pressure. Ambition, leadership, parenthood, responsibility, money, failure, success, relationships and change all place demands on a person. The interview explores the pressures surrounding the subject and the decisions they are making because of them.
03 / THE CONTRADICTION
WHERE DOES THE SIMPLE VERSION STOP BEING TRUE?
Real people rarely fit perfectly inside a headline. Someone can be ambitious and uncertain. Successful and dissatisfied. Confident in one part of life and completely lost in another. Middle Grey does not manufacture conflict. It creates enough room for complexity to exist.
04 / THE UNRESOLVED
WHAT HAVEN’T YOU FIGURED OUT YET?
Not every story needs to arrive at a lesson. The interview makes room for the decision that has not been made, the ambition that has not been achieved and the question the subject cannot answer today. Sometimes “I don’t know” is the most accurate answer available—and that answer deserves to be preserved.
Notes From the Middle Grey is the written side of UP A TIER. Essays and field notes about character, contradiction, ambition, pressure and the parts of a person’s story that remain unresolved. No manufactured certainty. No lessons forced before they have been lived. Just honest thinking from inside the work.
MIDDLE GREY ESSAYS — Ideas about character, pressure, contradiction and the stories people tell about themselves.
FIELD NOTES — Observations from inside the conversations and the process of documenting people.
THE UNRESOLVED — Questions and tensions that do not arrive at a clean conclusion.
UP A TIER creates commissioned cinematic documentary interviews for founders, individuals and families across Australia. Every project begins with a conversation about who should be documented, why the interview matters now and what the completed work needs to preserve or communicate.
TELL US ABOUT THE INTERVIEW
You do not need to arrive with a completed brief. Tell us who the interview is about, why this moment matters and what you want the completed interview to mean. Once the project is understood, UP A TIER will respond with the appropriate service information and pricing.
UP A TIER interviews people while their lives, beliefs and ambitions are still taking shape. You do not need to be famous, have everything figured out or arrive with a polished version of your story. We are interested in lived experience, pressure, contradiction, change and the questions you have not yet answered.
TELL US WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERS NOW
Submitting an application does not guarantee an interview. Editorial guests are selected by UP A TIER based on the strength, timing and suitability of the proposed conversation. Commissioned interviews are a separate service and do not automatically form part of the independently produced UP A TIER interview series.

I founded UP A TIER to document the part of a person’s story that traditional storytelling often overlooks: the unresolved middle.
It is where businesses are built, identities are tested, families evolve and consequential decisions are made—before hindsight turns uncertainty into a clean lesson.
Through Middle Grey Storytelling, I create cinematic documentary interviews that capture character in real time. For founders, individuals and families, the result has immediate value as a credible expression of who they are—and lasting value as an archive of who they were while their story was still unfolding.
The purpose is not to manufacture answers or force a transformation narrative. It is to document the journey honestly and remind audiences that none of us is the only person still figuring it out.
